Taken countless flights. Crazy when you think I spent 3 years in Sthlm, 1,5 in Prague and 1 in Düsseldorf flying every Monday back on Friday. Gold BA membership was great though . Got upgraded loads of time to sthlm

Flying is shit now . BA especially. I have to fly to Lux occasionally and it’s always fucking delayed . You have to fly like a million times to get a lounge pass.

"Entertainment was a movie on a pull down screen"

On that Kuwait Airlines flight I mentioned earlier, I swear they had an oil painting to look at for entertainment instead of a pull down screen showing a film.

Yep, to Bulgaria in '76.
Was my first time on a plane, can't remember if it was shit or not.

Maybe One Iron flew them on the way to Tblisi in 81?

Never flown Aeroflot but have visited Leningrad, Odessa and Yalta in the USSR, have even played in a football match in Leningrad, unfortunately I got a severe ankle sprain from their rabbit hole infested football pitch and had to go to their Soviet style hospital where I was treated by this scary looking matron who bandaged me up and gave me a sick note written in Cyrillic script which I never used.

Good times.

Another option is to look at a country you wouldn’t mind visiting and use their national carrier. Seen Syria, Sri Lanka and Japan by doing this.

Did anyone on here fly on Aeroflot during Soviet times?

Re: Cheap flights to Australia
The first few times I made the trip, 40 hours was normal. It would stop 6 or so times. Sometimes you had to get off while they refueled. Sometimes you had to sit there. In those days the food was disgusting and was often boiling and frozen in the same foil tray.
Entertainment was a movie on a pull down screen or a handful of audio channels.
The days before jets must have been a real ordeal.
NZ even worse. Imagine being stuck in a plane full of kiwis.

In my 20's I did a long stay over in a shit hole (Kuwait City, not long after the war finished) and I promised myself that I'd never do anything like that.

When you're in that position, you'd quite happily pay a couple of hundred pounds just to get back on your journey again.

Fifth - I couldn't do it.. It's a decent saving and for a few hours more say for example anywhere in S. E. Asia I'd definitely consider it, to Australia not a chance in hell unless I was skint and had to get there.

That's a hard journey

Currently cheap flights from now up to mid June on a Chinese airline via Shanghai. 40 hours but a few hundred cheaper than other airlines.

I don't think I've ever been there, been nearby.

CBE - Which part of Melbourne do you live?

If it was Melbourne I could have potentially put you up.

EVA goes to Brisbane. Via Bangkok and Taipei.

Maybe Len could provide more information as to his requirements.
But I definitely recommend stopping over in Thailand. Every middle aged man needs to do that once in his life.
And London to Australia in one go is dismal.

When checking flights to Bangkok recently Singapore were second cheapest after Cathay

Re: Cheap flights to Australia
Banjo, agreed re SQ. Only trouble is that most of their flights are so bloody long that you always associate them with unenjoyable journeys.

Re: Cheap flights to Australia
I choose Singapore, an excellent airline that know about service. They are a little more expensive than most but worth every red cent in my book.
